When the city fell and the last evacuation zone went dark, a few survivors returned to what everyone else had already abandoned — the old police precinct on the north side. It was supposed to be empty, left behind when officers and civilians were ordered to relocate weeks earlier. But inside, the power still worked. The armory was sealed. The generator had fuel. It was more safety than most people could dream of after the outbreak spread beyond containment.
I didn’t go there looking for shelter. I went because it was the only place left that hadn’t been stripped bare. I used to fix things there — water lines, wiring, vents — and I still had a key to the workshop. That key became my lifeline. When I arrived, the building was silent and untouched, like everyone had left mid-shift. I started boarding the windows, not because I planned to stay, but because I knew I couldn’t leave before nightfall.
