The car chase react scene in the 1968 film "Bullitt" is widely regarded as one of the most influential and iconic car chase sequences in cinema history. Lasting 10 minutes and 53 seconds, this legendary sequence wasn't originally part of the script but has become the film's most memorable element.

The chase features Lieutenant Frank Bullitt (played by Steve McQueen) in his Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT 2+2 Fastback pursuing villains driving a 1968 Dodge Charger 440 Magnum. The Charger was marginally faster than the Mustang, with a quarter-mile time of 13.6 seconds compared to the Mustang's 13.8 seconds.

Filmed around Easter of 1968, the production team faced initial resistance from San Francisco city officials who were concerned about the proposed high speeds and original plans to film on the Golden Gate Bridge. Eventually, they agreed to restrict filming to just a few city blocks.

What makes the sequence truly special is how it showcases the steep hills of San Francisco, with both vehicles catching air as they navigate the challenging terrain. Nearly 50 years after its release, Bullitt's chase scene is still considered by many to be the best movie car chase ever filmed and has become the benchmark against which all modern car chases are measured.

The sequence not only defined action filmmaking for generations to come but also had a significant impact on car culture, helping to elevate these American muscle cars to iconic status.
