Part 2 Exploring Iceland: Camera Tests, Stunning Landscapes, and Unique Moments in Reykjavík

Welcome to the second part of this series for September 2024. Last time, we stopped with photos arriving in East Iceland from the ferry via the Faroe Islands. I’ve been testing a new camera—the Pentax 17, a half-frame film camera using expired Kodak color film from March 2005. For more details, check out the first episode.

When testing cameras, like the Pentax 17, it’s more about understanding the equipment to see if I enjoy using it in my own work, rather than making traditional reviews. Since this camera has automatic aperture, I wanted to see how it handled sun stars—something I’m not usually fond of. However, the Pentax 17 surprised me with its artistic results, especially during an Iceland sunset near Reykjavík. The compact and quick camera made it easy to capture shots, like a vlogger working near Harpa Opera House or a small patch of grass growing in the city.

For those interested in my landscape photography, we return to East Iceland, capturing the stunning transition between East and West Iceland. Iceland’s scenery constantly shifts in color and contrast, depending on the weather, from black-and-white tones to vibrant blues and greens. I also visited the geothermal areas near Grindavik, where boiling mud fields offer dramatic contrasts between grays, reds, and browns.

There’s a lot to discover in Iceland’s landscapes, such as the view from north of Reykjavík, where I captured a volcanic eruption from a distance. With a half-frame camera, the resolution isn’t perfect, but it captures the ambiance well. In another instance, I photographed the view from Mosfellsbær, which shows a completely different scenery—more rugged and distant.

Switching gears, I used flash photography at a couple of bars in Reykjavík: first at Röntgen, where a mirror ball reflected the lively atmosphere of the dance floor, and then at Radar, where I captured a DJ illuminated by a green light. These shots highlight the Pentax 17’s versatility, even in challenging lighting conditions.

Another moment worth noting is my experience testing a Leica M240 with a vintage Elmar 50mm f2.8 lens. I recently reviewed this lens after using it for a long time, and the old-school rendering it produces is something I really enjoy. One photo I took was at a burger joint in Lemur, Reykjavík, which reminded me of American fast food chains. Testing these lenses and cameras keeps my skills sharp and helps me know how to use them for future projects.

Finally, I experimented with a Leica M8, an older digital camera, which I used to capture a movie set in Reykjavík. The camera’s low-light performance, even with its outdated CCD sensor, creates a unique greenish tint when pushed to its limits. I also used the Leica S007 medium format camera with a Summicron 100mm f2 lens, which offers incredible shallow depth of field and ghostly flare effects when shot against the sun. This camera, though heavy, provides a different shooting experience with its optical viewfinder.
