ইলিশ (বৈজ্ঞানিক নাম:Tenualosa ilisha) বাংলাদেশের জাতীয় মাছ। এটি একটি সামুদ্রিক মাছ, যা ডিম পাড়ার জন্য বাংলাদেশ ও পূর্ব ভারতের নদীতে আগমন করে। বাঙালিদের কাছে ইলিশ খুব জনপ্রিয়। এ ছাড়াও ইলিশ ভারতের বিভিন্ন এলাকা যেমন পশ্চিমবঙ্গ, উড়িষ্যা, ত্রিপুরা ও আসামে অত্যন্ত জনপ্রিয় একটি মাছ। ২০১৭-এ বাংলাদেশের ইলিশ মাছ ভৌগোলিক নির্দেশক বা জিআই পণ্য হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি পায়।Hilsha (scientific name: Tenualosa ilisha) is the national fish of Bangladesh. বাংলা ভাষা, ভারতের আসাম এর ভাষায় ‘ইলিশ’ শব্দটি পাওয়া যায় এবং তেলুগু ভাষায় ইলিশকে পোলাসা (তেলুগু: పులస Pulasa বা Polasa) আখ্যায়িত করা হয়। পাকিস্তানের সিন্ধ ভাষায় বলা হয় পাল্লু মাছি (সিন্ধু: پلو مڇي Pallu Machhi), ওড়িয়া ভাষায় ইলিশী (ওড়িয়া: ଇଲିଶି Ilishii) গুজরাটে ইলিশ মাছ মোদেন (স্ত্রী) বা পালভা (পুরুষ) নামে পরিচিত। ইলিশ অর্থনৈতিক ভাবে খুব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ গ্রীষ্মমন্ডলীয় মাছ। বঙ্গোপসাগরের ব-দ্বীপাঞ্চল, পদ্মা-মেঘনা-যমুনা নদীর মোহনার হাওর থেকে প্রতি বছর প্রচুর পরিমাণে ইলিশ মাছ ধরা হয়। এটি সামুদ্রিক মাছ কিন্তু এই মাছ বড় নদীতে ডিম দেয়। ডিম ফুটে গেলে ও বাচ্চা বড় হলে (যাকে বাংলায় বলে জাটকা) ইলিশ মাছ সাগরে ফিরে যায়। সাগরে ফিরে যাবার পথে জেলেরা এই মাছ ধরে। এই মাছের অনেক ছোট ছোট কাটা রয়েছে তাই খুব সাবধানে খেতে হয়।The word ‘Hilsa’ is found in Bengali, Assam, India and in Telugu Hilsa is called Polasa (Telugu: పులస Pulasa or Polasa). যদিও ইলিশ লবণাক্ত জলের মাছ বা সামুদ্রিক মাছ, বেশিরভাগ সময় সে সাগরে থাকে কিন্তু বংশবিস্তারের জন্য প্রায় ১২০০ কিমি দূরত্ব অতিক্রম করে ভারতীয় উপমহাদেশে নদীতে পাড়ি জমায়। বাংলাদেশে নদীর সাধারণ দূরত্ব ৫০ কিমি থেকে ১০০ কিমি। ইলিশ প্রধানত বাংলাদেশের পদ্মা (গঙ্গার কিছু অংশ), মেঘনা (ব্রহ্মপুত্রের কিছু অংশ) এবং গোদাবরী নদীতে প্রচুর পরিমাণে পাওয়া যায়। এর মাঝে পদ্মার ইলিশের স্বাদ সবচেয়ে ভালো বলে ধরা হয়। ভারতের রূপনারায়ণ নদী, গঙ্গা, গোদাবরী নদীর ইলিশ তাদের সুস্বাদু ডিমের জন্য বিখ্যাত। ইলিশ মাছ সাগর থেকেও ধরা হয় কিন্তু সাগরের ইলিশ নদীর মাছের মত সুস্বাদু হয় না। দক্ষিণ পাকিস্তানের সিন্ধু প্রদেশেও এই মাছ পাওয়া যায়। সেখানে মাছটি "পাল্লা" নামে পরিচিত। এই মাছ খুব অল্প পরিমাণে থাট্টা জেলায় ও পাওয়া যায়। বর্তমানে সিন্ধু নদীর জলস্তর নেমে যাওয়ার কারণে পাল্লা বা ইলিশ আর দেখা যায় না।Although hilsa is a saltwater fish or marine fish, it lives mostly in the sea but migrates to rivers in the Indian subcontinent over a distance of about 1200 km for breeding.
