Returning to Piano After Years: Tips for Adult Learners

Описание: Many adults who once played the piano often ask me how to start again after a long break. They feel lost and unsure of the best strategy. In this video, I share practical advice that can help you reclaim your musical heritage and get back to playing the piano.

The first step is to rebuild your intimacy with the keyboard. This means focusing on simple exercises that help you concentrate on finger movement, proper hand position, and the right amount of strength. The goal is to eliminate any unnecessary extra movements. Our hands and fingers can forget how to behave after a long time away, so we need to re-educate them with the simplest, cleanest gestures.

I recommend starting with your hands in a semicircle position, allowing only your fingers to do the work, avoiding movement from the whole hand or forearm. Pure technique exercises are perfect for this, helping you feel your hands on the keyboard and reactivating your fingers.

A great resource for this is the book by Charles Hanon, which is full of easy-to-read exercises with simple patterns. These allow you to focus solely on finger motion and contact with the keys.

Here is a tip: try making your finger movements a bit larger than usual. While some criticize this approach, many high-level pianists used it in their training to wake up their fingers. It is not about aggressive movements, but about amplifying the gesture just enough to stimulate tendons, strengthen hand muscles, and make your fingers quicker, especially after a long break.

Once you have started rebuilding your technique, the next step is to remember a piece you have already played. This is often a better strategy than trying to learn something brand new. The first rule here is to choose wisely; if you have not played for years, do not start with something too difficult to avoid frustration. Pick something simple and realistic. Then, treat the piece as if it were 100% new.

Start by reading it very slowly, looking at the score, and practicing hands separately. Pay close attention to the fingering you used before. Repeat this slow reading in sections, then bring your hands together, still very slowly. Focus on the choreography of your gestures. Only after that, introduce the metronome, starting very slowly. The metronome is powerful because it forces continuity and pushes you forward. With daily, serious practice, something amazing happens: the memory of the piece starts to return on its own, feeling like unlocking a hidden door. In about a week, you will feel the piece back in your fingers, and your focus can shift to interpretation.

As adults, maintaining discipline can be challenging, but the secret is to keep alive the flame that first gave you the desire to play. This flame might have been lit by a concert, a recording, a video, or a book. My advice is to feed that flame every day. Listen to music, go to concerts, read about music and composers. Do anything that connects you to the pleasure of music, something you can simply enjoy passively as a listener or reader. This is your fuel; it keeps the musical fire burning inside you and, with it, your discipline at the piano.

If you feel like your fingers do not quite respond the way you want, I have put together a "step by step guide to technical control of the piano". This guide is designed to help you get the most out of these exercises by showing you exactly how to focus during your practice. Here is: https://www.felipescagliusi.com/step-...
