Kimchi Warrior History:

Recently, Netflix had a huge hit with the Korean culture–promoting animation K-pop Demon Hunters. But who was the first pioneer animation to promote Korean culture?

The Kimchi Warrior character was created in Los Angeles in 2009 by Korean-American filmmaker Young Man Kang. Kang was a prolific filmmaker in the early 2000s, having made five feature films. However, during the late 2000s U.S. economic crisis, he struggled to secure funding for movies. Facing hard times and surviving on only rice and kimchi, Kang saw the U.S. comic Popeye and had an idea: what if a character ate special kimchi, gained supernatural powers, and defeated diseases? At that time, the Swine Flu outbreak was spreading, which inspired the first episode: Kimchi Warrior VS Swine Flu.

In 2013, Kimchi Warrior won three awards at the Los Angeles Web Festival. Korean media reviews were mixed—some positive, some highly critical. Many Korean netizens criticized the animation for its quality and claimed it made kimchi look unattractive. Kimchi Warrior’s fans, however, grew rapidly and even cyber-bullied the character’s critics.

Despite the backlash, Young Man Kang did not give up. He accepted reality and continued creating and posting the series on YouTube. Around 2021, about ten years later, a dispute arose between China and Korea over the origin of kimchi. Anti-fans discovered that Kimchi Warrior still existed and was promoting kimchi as a Korean cultural icon. Many former critics re-evaluated the series and began appreciating it in a new light.

Today, with the global rise of Korean culture, K-pop, and K-food, K-pop Demon Hunters became a huge hit. Many netizens now recognize Kimchi Warrior as a pioneer that started 15 years ago, paving the way for Korean culture promotion in animation.
