High street independents from the 1980s often faced takeovers to secure their futures. Etam and Tammy were close neighbours to BHS in Ilford, and ended up becoming part of the department store's concessions. Their long term fortunes were rather different however, with BHS now completely removed from UK high streets, Etam living on in its original French guise online. Others weren't as fortunate with K Shoes ceasing in the 1990s after being hit by the recession of the time. Another famous shoe shop, Barratts still lives on in name, but its Ilford store is now occupied by Pavers shoes.
Ensignbus is another sign of the times. Here seen operating the 145, it ran a few East London based routes in the late 80s and early 90s.
