Welcome to Bowlers Paradise!
After recently discontinuing the sky raptor, motiv comes out of left field with another symmetrical pearl with the same core, the Raptor Rush. Powered inside by that same high differential affliction V2 core, this next generation raptor features the new Propulsion FYJ Pearl cover which Motiv says is somehow both their strongest and most angular pearl cover yet.
So for the layout, I went with my tried and true 4.5x4x4 2LS layout. For these strong symmetrical pearls, its become my go to layout as it just works really well, and if you don't use your thumb, I think you should try it too.
But on the lanes, the Raptor Rush does most of what it's advertised to do. It's definitely a strong pearl, but I'm not too sure about angular. The cover is effectively clean through the front part of the lane for sure, but as the core starts up, instead of the ball flipping off the spot, the raptor squares up to the pocket and rolls straight at it.
And that unique roll is my favorite part about throwing this one. The responsiveness of this cover feels much more like an original primal rage than some of their recent underwhelming pearl options which is a huge improvement. Then pairing that with this strong core makes for a shape that's fun to play with and versatile enough to be effective in multiple parts of the lane.
But of course there has to be a downside, and for this one, the performance from the deep inside part of the lane isn't really there. Now, don't get me wrong. I didn't expect the Raptor Rush to be good from inside with how strong the cover and core both are, but don't let seeing this one at the top right of Motiv's ball chart trick you into thinking it's their best option to go to when it's time to get left and cover some boards.
So to offset that weakness, I'd recommend pairing this one with a subzero forge as well as a hyper venom. The subzero forge is so good that it feels near impossible to not recommend, and then the hyper venom will actually be a great choice to ball down to off of the raptor rush and not have to move out of your comfort zone. This is a great set of three options for the league bowlers out there who like to stay in the same zone for 3 games.
Jumping to our crossbrand comparisons, I first took a look at the Optimum Idol Pearl from Roto Grip and here I see a piece that's notably cleaner than the raptor rush, and with that, is more continuous through the pins as well. The Optimum idol pearl will be better than the raptor rush at opening up your angles the lane, so rev dominant players are more likely to match up a bit better with this one from Roto Grip.
Then I took a look at the Stealth Hybrid from Track, and here I see a shape that's actually kind of similar to the Raptor Rush. Both of these pieces will be in play in the same part of the lane, with the biggest difference being that the Stealth starts up a bit sooner and is smoother than the Raptor. That means lower rev rate bowlers are more likely to match up better with this one from Track.
But with that, here’s my recommendations on types of bowlers that I think would match up well with the Raptor Rush from Motiv. The first is Balanced Bowlers. I'm so happy to recommend a Motiv pearl to this group because boy it's been a while. The Raptor rush will be predictable enough to show these bowlers where the strikes are during the back half of their league night and then have the performance back it up and do the right thing shot to shot.
The second recommendation is for lefties. Because of the direct way this one sets up to the pocket, I see it being a great options for lefties to either drill strong for fresh conditions, or drill it weak to be the ball down off of a piece like the Crimson Jacal. Either way, the combination of this stronger cover with the heavy rolling core Affliction V2 core is a dream motion for most southpaws regardless of their rev rate.
The Raptor Rush from Motiv might have come a surprise release, but in the right hands, could be what you need to put up some surprisingly high scores.
