This week’s anthem, Epiphany Alleluias, by John Weaver (1937-2021) gives a fanfare-like treatment to texts from Isaiah and the Gospel of Matthew: “We have seen His star in the East, and are come to worship Him. Arise, shine, for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” It is written for SATB voices and organ, and the composer was also a pre-eminent organist and educator. Weaver retired in 2005 after 35 years as Director of Music and Organist at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. During that tenure he was also Head of the Organ Department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia (1972-2003) and Julliard in New York (1987-2004). His predecessor at Curtis insisted that an organist had not truly learned a piece of music unless it was memorized; Weaver continued that tradition, rare among organists, and brought it with him to Julliard. He also performed recitals worldwide, and he said of the organ, “You can’t just go out and play an instrument. If I’m going to go out and play a recital, I spend about 15 hours on that instrument before I feel like I know it well enough to really be able to play my best.”
