During the historic 2008 election period in Zimbabwe, the opposition was, for the first time, allowed to flight political adverts on the national broadcaster, ZBC. This marked a rare moment of access to state media, which had long been dominated by ruling party messaging.
At the same time, many Zimbabweans turned to South African channels such as e.tv, accessible via satellite dishes, to follow alternative coverage. Opposition parties also placed adverts on these platforms, seeking to reach viewers who felt that local broadcasts were heavily influenced by government narratives.
