This review compares the Arcterxy Atom AR vs Proton Hoody. They are two excellent outdoor jackets that can be worn as either a mid-layer, or as a stand-alone piece. They offer excellent technical performance, quality, and comfort. They are great for hiking, biking, climbing, trekking, and any outdoor sport. These jackets are also excellent for daily use; offering warmth and comfort in a very lightweight package that is also water-resistant. I compare these two products in terms of insulation, materials, warmth, features, and intended use.

Quick Summary conclusion: The Proton AR is better when you want to stay warm, and are engaging in high exertion activities. The Atom AR is better for casual use in cold weather, as a stand-alone piece, and in windy environments. The new Proton LT is similar to the Proton AR, but has slightly less insulation and only one chest pocket. The Atom LT is a lightweight hoody that is perfect for daily use in moderate climates. It has breathable stretch side panels and is very versatile. However, it is not as warm or durable as the Proton or the Atom AR.

The Proton AR, Atom AR, and Atom LT have the same Coreloft Insulation. This is synthetic insulation, which gives quick dry times, durability and retains warmth when damp. Down insulation has a great warmth to weight ratio, but performs very poorly when damp or wet. These jackets also have a continuous fabric design. This prevents shifting of the insulation and provides better warmth, water-resistance and wind resistance by getting rid of the typical baffle design.

You would be extremely happy with any of these jackets. I have had my Arc'teryx Proton AR for over a year, and I wear it almost every day, fall through spring.
