Lynch, Kentucky: Inside the Biggest Coal Company Town in America

Описание: At five in the morning a steam whistle went off against the side of Black Mountain, and in a hollow that narrow the sound did not travel away — it hit the rock and came back down on ten thousand people who owned nothing they were standing on. In 1917 the United States Coal and Coke Company, a subsidiary of United States Steel, bought nineteen thousand acres in the far corner of Harlan County, Kentucky, and built the largest coal camp in the world from scratch: six miles of paved street, fifty miles of water line, a thousand structures, a hospital, a theater, tennis courts, a cut-stone commissary and two separate school systems. This is Lynch from the inside — the rows, the scrip, the brass check number, the bathhouse, and what is still standing on those streets today.

📌 What you'll learn
• How a town of ten thousand was delivered rather than grown: the cut-sandstone commissary, hospital, hotel and bathhouse, the company power plant and electric light, and the tipple the company called the largest in the world.
• What a day's pay really came home as: tonnage instead of hours, dead work, the brass check hung on a loaded car, scrip drawn against wages not yet earned, and the deduction line for rent, light, house coal, the doctor and blasting powder.
• Who the company recruited and where it housed them — mountain families, Eastern and Southern European immigrants, and Black families brought up from Alabama and Georgia — how the separate rows, commissary sections, churches and schools worked in practice, and the full everyday life each community built, from the Lynch Colored School with its 567 pupils and 13 teachers to the ball field on the only flat ground in the hollow.
• What ended it: mechanization, the sale of the company houses in the 1950s, incorporation in 1963, the migration to Cleveland, Detroit and Chicago, and what a walk through Lynch, Benham and Portal 31 shows you now.
