Originally a song from the 1985 Y&T album 'Open Fire' "Summertime Girls" has been the biggest hit the band has ever had. That is saying something for a great band that has been around for 50 years! The upbeat nature and pop hooks no doubt had something to do with the cross over appeal. One listen and immediately I feel transported to the sunny beaches of California on a warm summer day, without a care in the world.

When you have a simple song like this what kind of guitar solo should be played? Simple and melodic is the right answer and that is what lead guitarist/vocalist Dave Meniketti plays. Based around the E major pentatonic scale, but played over the IV and V chords (A and B), the solo has a modal feel, kind of dreamy like the Lydian mode, which is played perfectly with just the right amount of cool phrasing, a fast lick and some climactic bends at the end to cap it off.
