A short video clip of Little Bunting Emberiza pusilla with BTO ring number ALL0585 taken from an agricultural site near Marden (Kent, England) prior to its release on 11/03/2023.
The bird was found in the bottom panel of one of my mist nets during a solo ringing session at around 09:10 hours on 11 March 2023. It was promptly identified as Little Bunting and, added further to my amazement, the bird had a ring on its right tarsus. It had turned out a fellow ringer mistakenly ringed the bird as a first year female Reed Bunting from the same site on 30 December 2020 (!)
Searches on BTO electronic and paper data have confirmed ALL0585 Little Bunting Emberiza pusilla (an adult male) is the first repeat wintering record in Britain & Ireland. The duration between ringing and recapture dates was 2 years 2 months 12 days; a longevity record for the species.
