One of the most famous moments in Spassky–Fischer (Game 1): a “quiet move” that wins a piece.
Fischer grabs the pawn with 29…Bxh2, but Spassky responds with the cold, positional shot 30.g3!. It doesn’t look dramatic — yet it’s lethal. The pawn move shuts the bishop’s escape squares, effectively trapping it on h2. Over the next moves, Spassky keeps everything under control, and the bishop is finally captured — turning the game into a winning endgame with a clear material advantage.
This is Spassky Universal at its finest: calm calculation, strategic accuracy, and ruthless conversion once the piece is won.
