In 1 John 5:7 through 10 we discovered the usage of threefold repetition or emphatic Semitic triplet literary style. In verses 7 & 8 our focus was on descriptive language for the Father and His Son. In verses 9 & 10 we switched to a topical focus targeting the words "witness" and "believeth."
FATHER: Father, Word, Holy Ghost
SON: Spirit, Water, Blood
WITNESS: Men, God, Son
BELIEVETH: Believer, Liar, Non-Believer
For the last 5 verses we moved away from the literary biblical style, only to return to it here with a significant difference from that which is outlined above.
1 John 5:16
King James Version
16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
Let's break this down, to find out...
While topical, this time the focus is not one full of hope and assurance but quite the opposite. Unlike the other verses this verse combines two topics as one.
1: sin which is not unto death
2: sin not unto death
3: a sin unto death
Romans 8:2
King James Version
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
As we explore this verse, we will uncover why this one sets its own course compared to any of the other ones listed above.
What we will find is kin to this thought process.
Isaiah 53:6
King James Version
6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
