Описание: In preparation for the D-Day landings in June 1944, Southampton was designated as Marshalling Area C. The city and its surroundings were transformed into a massive network of transit and assembly points, famously nicknamed "Sausage Camps". These camps were officially known as Marshalling Area camps earned their colloquial name because their boundaries were marked as oval, sausage-shaped blobs on military planning maps. These were the final staging areas where troops were "sealed" in the weeks before the invasion to maintain total secrecy. The camps in Area C could hold tens of thousands of personnel; for example, the four camps on Southampton Common alone had a capacity of 8,500 men and 1,000 vehicles.
