TRAI April 2026 Telecom Data: Remove M2M and See the Real Truth | Airtel vs Jio vs VI vs BSNL
TRAI has released its Telecom Subscription Data for April 2026. But looking at just the headline numbers doesn't give you the full picture.
In this video I have done a full trend analysis using a dashboard I built, covering June 2025 to April 2026, and broken down what is really happening across all four operators.
What you will learn in this video:
The M2M problem — Machine to Machine connections are bundled into TRAI's wireless subscriber numbers but generate almost no revenue. When you strip M2M out, the subscriber story looks very different — especially for Vodafone Idea, which appears to be adding subscribers in TRAI's reported data but is actually losing consumer subscribers every single month.
Real Net Adds — Airtel added 1.12 million consumer subscribers in April, Jio added 1.89 million. These are the numbers that actually matter for revenue.
Subscriber levels and market share — Jio at 41.5%, Airtel rising to 35.1%, VI falling to 15.6%. Where is the share going and who is gaining from VI's losses.
VLR quality signal — Airtel at 99.7%, Jio at 98.6%, VI stuck at 85.3% with nearly 29 million dormant SIMs, and BSNL at a alarming 55.9% meaning almost half their registered base is never active on the network.
Wireline and FWA — how Jio and Airtel are growing fixed line and fixed wireless access, and why VI and BSNL are absent from this growth story.
VI deep dive — the full Vodafone Idea picture, why their numbers look better than they are, and which circles they are gaining and losing in.
Circle level analysis — which circles each operator gained and lost in April 2026, and how they compare against each other in the same markets.
Key numbers from April 2026:
Airtel consumer net add: +1.12 million
Jio consumer net add: +1.89 million
VI consumer net add: -0.42 million (losing despite M2M masking it)
BSNL: near flat
Jio total FWA: 13.3 million (5G FWA + UBR)
Airtel 5G FWA: 3.76 million
If you follow Indian telecom, this is the analysis you need to watch before reading any news headline about TRAI data.
