Pre-Christmas deal : two for one! Two pieces based on the Advent Lutheran chorale "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" (Awake, the voice is calling us) written by Philipp Nicolai in 1599.
The first is the well known Bach organ version, the first of the six Schübler Chorales, and one of five transcribed from various cantata arias from the composer's years in Leipzig (1723-1750).
The second is the opening Toccata from a Partita on “Wachet Auf” by the sadly short-lived German organist and choir trainer Hugo Distler (1908 –1942) who in the last year of his life was conductor of the State and Cathedral Choir in Berlin. See : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hugo_Di...
The organ is that in St Lawrence in Rotterdam built by Marcussen & Son in 1973. The instrument is based from 32-foot pedal pitch upwards, consists of six divisions (Rugwerk, Hoofdwerk, Bovenwerk, Borstwerk, Chamadewerk and Pedaal). The key mechanism is entirely mechanical (rather than electric) with 85 speaking stops and ca. 7600 pipes. It is said to be the largest purely mechanical organ in Europe.
