"Well, I mean, one of my first reactions was: am I OK? I made sure I can move all my limbs, I made sure I still had all my teeth, all my fingers. I was one of the first people they helped out, and I got to see more and more people coming out. They sat a man down next to me, complete side of his head was completely caked in blood, you couldn't even see his hair. It was completely bright red. I don't speak very good Spanish, he kept trying to talk to me but I was kind of trying to console him but Most people were in worse condition than me. They just kept bringing more and more out, and there was a lot of crying, there was a lot of screaming, there was a lot, a lot, a lot of blood."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Ward, train crash survivor:
"I though it was a dream. The first thing I remember: my car came ripped apart from the car next to it, so I was able to go out a door, there was nothing there, just a hole at the end of the train car. I walked through it. Someone was helping me, I have no recollection who it was, if I did I would give them a big thank you. They walked me through it, the train was in a ditch where I had fallen. They helped me up out the side of the ditch, they kind of sat me down, I was there for a good 30 seconds or a minute before I kind of begin come to my senses and think: you know, I think I'm awake, I think this really happened. I started kind of piecing together: OK, there is a smoking train hulk here, I was on the train, we must have crashed."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Ward, train crash survivor:
"I'm so sorry that there was a damper of some much death cast over the festivities. I mean, I'm sorry that so much death occurred in the first place, it's horrible. I hope people are able to kind of, I guess, get over this and move on. I do not say that in the way of "oh, it doesn't matter". I'm saying this in a way of, it's horrible that so much death and tragedy occurred."

STORYLINE:
Seconds before the Spanish train that he was aboard lifted off the tracks, Mormon missionary Stephen Ward said he glanced up from the journal he was writing and noticed a backpack tumble from a rack.
Moments later, he blacked out as the train smashed into a concrete wall at high speed.
He awoke to a scene that seemed like a nightmare.
"There was a lot of crying, there was a lot of screaming, there was a lot, a lot, a lot of blood," Ward, 18, of Bountiful, Utah said on Saturday.
"They walked me through it, the train was in a ditch where I had fallen. They helped me up out of the side of the ditch, they kind of sat me down, I was there for a good 30 seconds or a minute before I kind of begin come to my senses and think: you know, I think I'm awake, I think this really happened," he added.
Ward said an information screen for passengers showed the train was traveling at 194 kilometres per hour (121 miles per hour) moments before the crash.
Ward's parents didn't know he was on the train.
