The war in the Gran Chaco, or 'la guerra del chaco' was an extremely exhausting, costly and disastrous war for both participants, Bolivia and Paraguay. The war itself was marked by mismanagement on the Bolivian side, and the aftermath marked a turning point in the history of both countries, as a period of economic and political chaos ensued. It was the bloodiest conflict in Latin America during the 20th century... over a desert.
