Today we’re heading to Hermanus, one of the world’s best whale-watching destinations, and we’re incredibly lucky because it’s whale season. Instead of joining the Marine Big 5 Safari, our guide brought us to Southern Right Charters for a last-minute whale-watching adventure — the perfect surprise on our free day before flying home.

We rushed to the dock after arriving late, but even in the hurry, the sparkling ocean views were impossible to ignore. Once onboard, we headed straight to the upper deck as the boat left the harbour — cold winds, shimmering blue water, and mountain views everywhere. Soon the excitement began: our first sightings of Southern Right Whales, their massive bodies breaking the surface before disappearing again. A sailboat drifting across the ocean created a picture-perfect scene, and the crew shared fascinating facts about why whales breach, communicate, and interact. Some whales came closer, lifting their backs and tails above the water, and even without dramatic jumps, the experience was magical — especially when a whale appeared right behind us.

After returning to the harbour, we explored Hermanus town — its coastal viewpoints, cliff-side breeze, boutique shops, whale sculptures, and iconic photo frame. We even spotted a whale breaching in the distance from the cliffs. We wrapped up the visit with lunch overlooking the ocean, surrounded by Hermanus’ marine-themed landmarks.

This coastal gem gave us one of the most unforgettable mornings of our trip.
