This channel is all about life teaching 8th grade Language Arts in the middle school classroom. I have been teaching 9 years in the public school system and have learned a few tips and tricks along the way that I would love to share. It is also about my journey as a mom of three young kids and incorporating parenting into working full time. Finally, and most important to me, it's about God giving me the strength to do what I do and walking by faith. I will be posting updates and tips weekly, so make sure to check back in and subscribe in order to stay tuned. Also, if you like what you hear, the best compliment that you can give is by hitting the like button. So whether you are a veteran teacher or brand new, grab a hot beverage and join me for a little chat at Life, Literacy, Write.
This video is the tour of my completed middle school classroom. I walk you through the different areas and explain my reasoning behind each section and how I set it up.
The main areas are:
Teacher Desk- This is my command central. It's a place to display my personality and have quick access to all the important information I need.
Student Work Wall- This is where I hot-glued ribbon to my wall and I clip clothespins on it to hand student work. The sign says "Refrigerator Worthy Student Work."
Conversations Corner- This is a dry erase paper from Hobby Lobby called "Better than Paper" and I use it to have students respond to different questions about their reading. The goal is to create a community that promotes and respects reading.
Reading Nook- The reading nook is my library space for students to peruse the books and make their selections for "Read First." I have decided to use the couch area as a reward. If a student is one of my student helpers for the week, they earn the right to sit on the couch. My helpers rotate each week, so eventually every student gets to sit there.
"Read First"- This is a student choice driven reading task in my class. Students select a grade appropriate book of their choice and read it for the first 10 minutes of every class. Some days if they are really in the zone, I let them read longer. They follow this reading time by completing a standards aligned entry log.
Student Supply Center- This is where students pick up all the materials for my class in one-stop. This includes handouts, absent work, utensils and "Read First" books.
