It is situated on a strategic hilltop, surrounded by thick defensive walls made of limestone blocks. It is part of a system of six Dacian fortresses that were used to defend against Roman invasions.

The city had sacred zones, including a large circular sanctuary with wooden and stone columns, believed to have been an astronomical calendar or temple. These religious structures reflect the advanced spiritual life of the Dacians, who practiced a polytheistic religion deeply tied to nature.

In 1999, Sarmizegetusa Regia, along with several other Dacian fortresses, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its historical and cultural importance.

After the Roman conquest, the city was partially destroyed, and the Romans built a new capital, Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa, about 40 kilometers away. Despite the destruction, the remnants of Sarmizegetusa Regia provide significant insights into Dacian civilization.
