Balinese is spoken on the predominantly Hindu island of Bali in Indonesia by more than 3 million people. Like neighbouring Javanese, Balinese has different registers that are used depending on the age and social status of the speakers (although not as complex as in Javanese).
What is uniquely Balinese though is the numeral system which unusually complex and irregular.
I interview Edmundo Luna, an American academic based in Japan, expert on Balinese culture and language (technically he is an expert on Indonesian culture and language in general!) and perfomer of Balinese dance.
Among other things, we discuss the intricacies of counting in Balinese (very unusual and quite different from proto-Austronesian) and also its similarities and differences with other Austronesian languages.
Imagine a language where 75 is literally "telung-benang" meaning 3 threads! Or 200 ("satak") literally means "one bundle" and 400 is "samas" (one gold)! Curious? Keep watching then :)
Feel free to skip to the various sections:
5:50 Politeness levels in Balinese
9:20 Ways to say "eat" from most to least polite!
11:31 Is Balinese close to Javanese?
13:22 Balinese words that end in a schwa
