Xbox co-founder Seamus Blackley recently shared a starkly pessimistic outlook on the brand's future, claiming that Microsoft is currently in the process of "sunsetting" Xbox to prioritize its core artificial intelligence business.

His assessment, primarily detailed in a recent interview with GamesBeat, includes several key warnings:

Palliative Care Role: Blackley compared new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma—who moved from Microsoft’s CoreAI division to replace Phil Spencer—to a "palliative care doctor" whose job is to "slide Xbox gently into the night".
AI vs. Creativity: He argues that Microsoft’s current focus on generative AI is "at odds" with the traditional "auteur model" of game development. He believes Microsoft now views everything as a "gen AI problem" and that AI will eventually "subsume" games entirely.

The End of the Console Race: Blackley noted that the narrative of having the "most powerful console" is no longer helpful or relevant in the current market, suggesting that the era of traditional hardware-focused competition is over for Microsoft.

Loss of Identity: He suggested that it would be "shocking" for Microsoft to appoint someone passionate about the creator-driven business of games, as it would conflict with the company's broader AI-driven mission.

While Blackley believes the brand is winding down, Microsoft's new leadership has publicly countered these claims, with Asha Sharma pledging to avoid "soulless AI slop" and reiterating a commitment to high-quality hardware and multi-platform gaming.
