THE ARCHITECT OF REGGAE RADIO
As the founding general manager and chief architect of IRIE FM, Clyde made the bold decision that would change Jamaican broadcasting forever — to create the world’s first all-reggae radio station.
“It’s monumental for me to have been a contributor to an institution like IRIE,” he reflects. “We were toying with formats, and when pressed by advertisers, I simply said it would be all reggae. Before I knew it, I had to take that idea to the board — and they said yes.”
That single moment became a cultural revolution. IRIE FM gave Jamaica a soundtrack that was purely its own, amplifying artists like Garnett Silk, Tony Rebel, Shabba Ranks, and Patra. “It was as though everything aligned — the music, the message, the moment,” Clyde recalls.
THE PRODUCER AND THE POLICYMAKER
Clyde isn’t just a broadcaster — he’s a producer, policy thinker and cultural economist.
As a co-producer of Beenie Man’s Grammy Award-winning album “Art and Life,” he helped bring reggae-dancehall to new global heights.
“Musically, that was the high point of my career,” he admits.
But beyond the studio, Clyde has been instrumental in shaping Jamaica’s cultural policy, advising on creative industry development and pushing for greater economic ownership.
“For this to happen, there has to be more indigenous investment,” he explains. “We need to fund our own projects so rewards stay in Jamaica rather than go elsewhere. We’re rich in creativity, but we need structure and cohesion to truly benefit.”
THE MAN BEHIND THE MIND
Raised in a musical family, Clyde learned rhythm and responsibility early. His father, a dance promoter and guitarist, filled his childhood with sound and community. “I soaked up everything,” he recalls. “That experience has served me in every part of my life.”
And as Penny teases him — “And to think that someone this posh got a name check by Vybz Kartel. Too funny. I love that!” — Clyde laughs. The mutual respect is clear. He’s as comfortable being saluted by dancehall icons as he is advising ministers.
On National Heroes’ Day, October 16, Clyde McKenzie was honoured for his service to the creative industry, media and broadcasting in Jamaica.
“It feels good,” he says with quiet pride. “I’m not much into titles — this is more for my family — but I understand the importance of recognition.”
