In November 1878, American painter James Whistler sued the dean of British art critics, John Ruskin, over a bad review. One painting in particular had so aggravated Ruskin that he accused Whistler of "flinging a pot of paint in the public's face": Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket. In his new book, Paul Thomas Murphy explores this fascinating conflict that rocked the art world, and shows that the court trial was just the beginning of the battle for both men.
In this talk for the Whistler Society, Mr Murphy discusses the context for this case, what Whistler and Ruskin hoped to gain, what they lost and how they set about trying to recover their reputations.
