The Annual Mosser Hunt - Furness Iron History - Suzuki XF 650 Freewind On and Off Road.
Here we search in quest of the artifact from the iron making industry called a "Mosser" (pronounced 'mozzer'), at least that it what it is called in this part of the country. Because the metallurgical origin of these is somewhat mysterious, I begin the process, here in this video, of visiting all the blast furnace and forge sites hereabouts to see if Mossers are actually to be found at those sites. When I have completed this whole process (perhaps over the course of several years and several subsequent videos) we shall perhaps be able to finally deduce whether they appear only at furnaces, only at forges, or at both, or perhaps even sometimes neither. The observations will be empirical and recorded on this channel.
A mosser is iron rich in make-up, attracts a magnet, and is often to be found acting as coping stones atop dry stone walls. Being atop the walls, they sometimes become coated with moss, and that is speculated to be the origin of the term "mosser" (but again pronounced with a 'zz' thus 'mozzer').
Updating this in October 2021, I have only recently become aware of the term "Salamander" which alludes to a massive iron 'cold cast' occurring in the sole of a furnace, which must subsequently be removed to enable the furnace to function. Also the term "Bear" can be heard used to describe a not dissimilar 'cold cast' event. (In both these cases, the term 'clot' may be found to be aptly descriptive).
Both of these latter terms seem to mostly originate from the early iron industry in areas of the American Colonies. Mossers are certainly not of the same scale and size as 'Salamanders' or 'Bears', but the process of their generation may have similar founding characteristics, and they may indeed comprise of identical material constituents.
Are the terms 'Salamander' and 'Bear' (in this context) colloquial only to the Eastern seaboard of America? Is the term 'Mosser' colloquial only to the South lake District (Furness) District only, or is it common to other regions and countries? These are the questions we seek to unravel during this metallurgical enquiry.
Furness District = South Lake District - U.K.
