Pacific National’s 90 class locomotives have spent their entire working lives in the Hunter Valley, hauling coal trains between the port of Newcastle and the many mines located northwest of the city. Introduced into service in 1994, these heavy haul locomotives were purpose built for this task and have been a mainstay of Hunter Valley coal operations for more than three decades.
As their time in frontline service draws to a close, most of the class has now been placed into storage. However, as of January 2026, a small number remained active. In this film, shot at Antiene (near Muswellbrook) on 21 January 2026, a trio of 90 class units—still wearing their original FreightCorp livery—is seen hauling a loaded coal train through this busy location.
The 90 class have been mighty soldiers of the Hunter Valley, and this video serves as both a record of their final years and a tribute to their long and reliable service on Australia’s most intense coal network.
