"When She Sees Me" - ROTTMNT Donnie AU (Read Description)

This mainly serves to establish the relationship between April and Donnie as they are largely the main characters here. First let me establish that this is not explicitly a ship. I'm keeping it vague so as to not alienate any fans of ROTTMNT. I'd put them somewhere between platonic besties and romantic potential, but they keep dancing up and down the line.
April is largely like a sister to the other three turtles, but there was always something about the way she and Donnie had chemistry on screen that didn't put their relationship in the same category as the rest.

So here is how I think April met the turtles.
One night, Raphael decided to take his brothers and explore the surface while Splinter was asleep. They grew up hearing the sounds of the city and seeing the world through TV screens, but tonight they had enough. They wanted to see what was up there for themselves, to see what they had been missing out on, to do something new.
They largely stuck to alleyways and only snuck onto a rooftop when it was safe. The view from up there changed their lives forever. Seeing a world so full of light and sound, with clear air and a sky full of stars (and air pollution). They never wanted to go back down.
Leo suggested to exploring via rooftops, leaping to the next before anyone can agree. Everyone followed except Donnie, with his softshell and his "shellmet" (helmet for his shell) still in beta, he was too scared. He decided to run up and down fire escapes to follow instead. A short-lived plan as he immediately fell and scraped his knees. In the commotion, the window he fell next to opened and a human girl was there, staring at him with a wide expression. Donnie hid in his shell, hoping his brothers would come and save him, but this girl didn't scream or run, she introduced herself. Her name was April. April O'Neil.
She gave him a bandana to wrap around his knee and went to get some bandages, but by the time she came back, he was gone.
Donnie couldn't get her out of his head. A human girl looked at him, and wasn't scared. Could it be that he found...a friend?
He snuck out by himself the next night to see her, and to his surprise, she invited him in. She wanted to know all about him, and he wanted to know about her, so they talked all night. And the next night. And the next until before they knew it, 2 months had passed.
Donnie decided to finally introduce her to his brothers, but had a secret worry. He knew that his brothers were way more interesting than him, and if she saw them, maybe she wouldn't want to hang out with him anymore.
That's not what happened, obviously, adding the brothers to their friend group was the best decision they had ever made, she practically became part of the family, Donnie helped her get into college, April helped him make friends on college chat sites, they saved the world a few times, and the rest is history.
