Speaking at a 'Board of Peace' event — attended by several heads of state and international istitutions invited to oversee the implementation of the peace plan proposed for Gaza — US President Donald Trump once again reiterated his claim of having mediated an end to the India-Pakistan conflict last May, while also praising Pakistani PM Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir as "great" people.
While reading out the names of each attendee who would be on the Board and explaining how he felt about them personally, Trump also spoke about Sharif during his address.
Referring to alleged conversations he had with both countries's heads, Trump claimed, now for more than the 30th time, that he threatened both Sharif and Indian PM Narendra Modi with 200% tariffs and other trade restrictions if they did not agree to put an end to the four-day conflict.
Notably, India has previously unquivocally rejected Trump's claims of mediation and trade threats during the conflict; meanwhile, Pakistan has neither confirmed nor denied the details of his claims, but has explicitly given him credit for ending the conflict.
Speaking of the loss of fighter jets during the conflict— a number that he keeps increasing each time he speaks about it—Trump put the number at 11 this time around, having, on various previous occasions, claimed three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten as the actual number of jets lost.
According to Trump, the economic pressure prompted both sides to pull back, leading to a resolution within days. He framed the episode as a major diplomatic success, suggesting that millions of lives were potentially saved from all-out war between two nuclear nations.
Throughout his speech, Trump praised the leadership of both countries while emphasising his belief in strong negotiation tactics backed by economic power.
"They both wanted to fight. But when it came to money, nothing like money. When it came to losing a lot of money, they said, 'I guess we don't want to fight.'"
