For any copyright, please send me a message.  Prue Leith has admitted she’s been ‘selfish’ in her relationship with her daughter Li-Da, after adopting her when she was a baby.  The Great British Bake Off star has been documenting her and her daughter’s journey to Cambodia to search for her birth parents.  However, she was quick to admit she wasn’t always as open to finding out about Li-Da’s past.  ‘I think I’m quite tactless,’ Prue admitted. ‘I hardly ever go delving into psychological this and that.  ‘So I’m probably not the right mother to talk to her enough, I think I never have talked to her enough. Maybe it’s a kind of selfishness on my part. I’m very busy and so I assume everything looks right and must be right.  ‘I don’t go scratching the surface looking for problems. I think there’s probably stuff about her Cambodian background that I’ve never asked her. And maybe I could have done that more.’  Later on in the episode, she told Li-Da directly: ‘I’m really sorry I wasn’t more interested in the past 20 years ago when [Yvette Pierpaoli, who helped Li-Da to be adopted] was still alive.  ‘I think it’s only coming to Cambodia now with you that I’ve realised.’  Prue, 80, and her late husband Rayne Kruger are parents to son Daniel, but had also adopted Li-Da when she was one year old.  Li-Da, now in her mid 40s, had been from Phnom Penh in Cambodia, but left following her adoption before the Khmer Rouge carried out the Cambodian genocide, where nearly a quarter of the country’s population were killed between 1975 and 1979.  And Prue admits that while she ‘desperately hoped’ Li-Da would be reconnected with birth mother, she was worried about seeing much less of her daughter.  Speaking to The Guardian, Prue said of filming: ‘I remember desperately hoping she was Li-Da’s mother because I knew how important it was for Li-Da to find her.  ‘But part of me thought, “Oh god… she has a whole family.” I’ve had Li-Da for 45 years am I prepared for her to focus on the Cambodia side of her family and see much less of her?’  Prue also recalled what it was like raising Li-Da and said there was one time she was called a ‘disgrace’ by another woman in public for ‘taking Li-Da’ away from her culture.  Prue Leith: Journey with my daughter is available on All 4.  Got a story?  If you’ve got a celebrity story, video or pictures get in touch with the Metro.co.uk entertainment team by emailing us [email protected], calling 020 3615 2145 or by visiting our Submit Stuff page – we’d love to hear from you.
