Open Research looks different for each research project and will depend on who the participants are and what data you are working with. A common phrase for making research open is “as open as possible, as closed as necessary”. However, in research that concerns itself with vulnerable and marginalised people, either directly, as participants, or indirectly, through sensitive datasets and secondary sources, it often poses ethical challenges to make data freely and openly available online. Is it ever possible to apply open research principles to this type of research? This event brought together researchers from a range of disciplines to share their experiences and strategies for navigating the ethical challenges of open research.
