"The 1980s witnessed the emergence of Shrine Records on the rare soul scene as an increasing number of titles became prominent in DJ sets. The reaction from the dance floor was matched by collectors who worked hard to obtain the elusive 45s and, over time, a mystique grew around the label given that so little was known about it.
In 1986 Derek Pearson published the first Shrine Records discography (Shades of Soul issue 9) and his musings about the increasing obsession with Shrine, its origins and the reasons why the records were so rare reflected the discussions that many collectors were having. As the air of mystery surrounding Shrine continued to grow the questions continued to increase ... we all wanted answers but they couldn't be found.
In May 1989 I spent the weekend in London visiting my Motown collector friend John Lester. We had arranged a visit with Ian Levine and called ahead to make sure it was still convenient; there was no reply. When I finally caught up with him he apologised stating he had to go to the airport to collect Barbara Randolph ... I thought that was pretty impressive and during my response I said "It must be amazing to meet people like Barbara ... if there was just one person I could meet it would be Eddie Singleton" ... I had no idea that she was, in fact, married to Eddie and when Ian told me he was with her I was speechless.
Ian told me that Ady Croasdell knew that Eddie was in town and had arranged to meet him to discuss a licensing deal. Ady and I were in touch on a pretty regular basis so I asked him if he could hook me up with Eddie to do an interview which he gladly agreed to do.
The interview took place on Saturday 12 May 1989 and was published in August 1989 in Shades of Soul (Issue 17). What Eddie revealed, during the course of the interview, answered many of the questions we had all been asking. To me, and many others, the story of Shrine is fascinating and I hope that being able to listen to the interview will convey the depth of emotion that Eddie still felt so many years after Shrine was forced to close its doors
