The Batavi were a fierce and influential Germanic people who lived along the Rhine frontier, caught between independence and the expanding power of Rome. Renowned as exceptional warriors and horsemen, they became valued allies of the Roman Empire, supplying elite troops who served in distant campaigns from Britain to the eastern provinces. In 69 CE, tensions erupted in the Batavian Revolt under the leadership of Julius Civilis, briefly threatening Roman control in the north.
