Speaking to reporters during a press briefing recently, Peskov distanced Russia from the accusations leveled by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who had earlier characterized the sale of agricultural goods from Russian-controlled territories as an illegitimate business.

When asked for Russia’s official position on the tension, which saw the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry summon the Israeli Ambassador just a day prior. Peskov made it clear that Moscow would not act as an intermediary or defender in the dispute.

The rift between Ukraine and Israel centers on the arrival of vessels at the Port of Haifa carrying grain that Kyiv claims was looted from occupied Ukrainian regions. President Zelenskyy escalated the rhetoric on Tuesday, warning that purchasing such goods entails legal liability and threatening sanctions against Israeli entities involved in the trade.

Israeli officials have countered by noting a lack of forensic evidence provided by the Ukrainian side, leading to what Foreign Minister Gideon Saar called Twitter diplomacy.

Analysts suggest the Kremlin’s dismissive tone is a calculated move to highlight the lack of unity among nations that have traditionally opposed Russian influence. By labeling the Ukrainian government as the Kyiv regime and leaving them to navigate the fallout with Israel alone, Moscow is emphasizing the diplomatic isolation Kyiv faces when its interests clash with the commercial and legal standards of its partners.
The standoff reached a turning point on April 30, when the Israeli importer Zenziper ultimately declined the cargo from the vessel Panormitis to avoid further diplomatic damage, effectively ending the immediate crisis without Russian involvement.
