The Supreme Court of India, on Wednesday, 28 January 2026, took serious exception to an attempt by Nikhil Kumar Punia an upper-caste Hindu convert to Buddhism to claim minority reservation benefits.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi, characterized the move as a “new type of fraud” and emphasized the dangers of misusing constitutional safeguards.
The Court instructed the Haryana government to clarify the legal framework governing minority certificates and to explain whether general category candidates are eligible for minority status following conversion, particularly when their earlier declarations stated otherwise.
The proceedings underline the Supreme Court’s determination to safeguard the reservation system from exploitation and to uphold constitutional principles of equality and fairness.
