Indonesian rescue operations have been working ceaselessly over the past four days, searching for any signs of life from the rubbles, and some survivors are seeking what is left of their belongings in the rubble.
The Indonesian Government is providing as much as they can to survivors in desperate need of support after the devastating 6.4 magnitude earthquake in the regency of Pidie Jaya in Aceh on Wednesday caused more than 20,000 homeless. .
Zahrina is picking up the pieces of what used to be her new home. She is one of the 20,000 people who have been displaced by this powerful earthquake.
"I haven't seen my husband in four days. He is still in a trauma. We have experienced it twice now, first the tsunami in 2004 and now this. It is unbearable," said Zahrina.
Now she spends her time in a temporary shelter with her two children, waiting for the day that she can step into her home once again.
"I hope the government would help me rebuild my home. I don't have any money left. I spent all of my savings building a house and now it is a pile of rubble," said Zahrina.
The Indonesian government is trying to mobilize help across the regencies affected by this quake, mainly in Cubo, a small town on the outskirts of Pidie Jaya. For many people there, even basic necessities like food and water is a luxury. The past few days has been challenging.
The government has provided an assistance of about 3.5 billion U.S. dollars. Refugee camps are available around the city and about 1,000 mobile clinics have been set up.
The Chinese government is also among those relief providers. They have donated 100,000 U.S. dollars through Indonesia's Red Cross.
Volunteer doctors are bringing hope and providing care in the wake of sorrow.
"Psychological support is the most important thing for the people here. In the past few days, we have experienced 5 aftershocks. That makes it difficult for the survivors to heal completely," said Doctor Arina, a volunteer medical staffer.
Arina has been working over the past four days, healing survivors, many with severe injuries. She treated more than 100 patients today alone, including children in trauma.
"The injured people that have come here are usually having sleeping troubles, especially children. Most of them are physically unhealthy because they are mentally unstable," said Arina.
Heroes like Arina are continuously pouring in to ease the pains for survivors.
