Background:
Built between 1003 and 1010 CE by Rajaraja I — one of the greatest rulers of the Chola dynasty — the Brihadeeswarar Temple is among the largest Hindu temples in India and an architectural masterpiece of Dravidian temple art.

Known locally as Periya Kovil or Peruvudaiyar Kovil, the temple is part of the heritage-listed Great Living Chola Temples and has earned UNESCO World Heritage status for its historical, cultural and architectural significance.

Here, the vimana (tower) soars up to 216 feet (approx. 66 m), making it one of the tallest temple towers in South India — capped by a single block of granite weighing around 80 tons.
The temple also houses a massive carved Nandi statue and miles of stonework carved out of granite — a testament to the engineering and artistry of 11th-century Chola artisans.
