A new study recently received a lot of attention in some trade media dealing with the risk that adult ADHD may pose for developing dementia. In this video, I discuss this study along with other evidence to try and shed some caution and complexity to what may have been a simplistic conclusion about ADHD increasing risk for dementia. To date that relationship has not been proven, although there may be some slight genetic risk posed from ADHD for later dementia. More likely is that ADHD that develops in mid to late life (50s or later) might be an early warning sign or risk factor for later dementia. But this says nothing about the risk that ADHD in children, teens, or adults before mid-life says about risk for dementia. And there are confounding factors that could be at play in the evidence found to date. Certainly we need a lot more research before one can understand this relationship.
