The characters {Agnes, Cordelia, Fern and Clyde} are first introduced with the book and map and start their thrilling ghost journey at The Flask tavern, near Highgate cemetery, as historically during the Victorian era a Spanish barmaid hung herself due to a heartbreak. There is also a true history of illegal autopsies being performed in The Flask from bodies stolen from Highgate Cemetery. Moreover this spikes the groups intrigue initiating the start of their tale.

The characters:

Protagonist Agnes, is 19-years-old and the strategic leader of the group. She is determined, bold, rebellious and mentally strong even when she cannot escape the temptations and power the book holds.

Cordelia, the antagonist, she is an 18-years-old, highly intellectual “Morute" girl. Thirsty to gain the knowledge and abilities including the darkness of the book all for herself. She is jealous of Agnes’ leadership and is in a constant competition with her.

The 17-year-old ‘Lolita-Goth’ Fern, the youngest and most introverted of the group, is the most sensitive to the dead and the unforeseen effects of the book, thus seeing and hearing them more vividly than the others.

On the other hand, Clyde, Fern's partner, a Sid Vicious-inspired 18-year-old punk, is highly opinionated, grounding in feasibility in regards to the girls' impulsive decisions. Despite his reckless nature and bad habits, he does not wish to become involved in the group's affairs.
