Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) in a very short time have become popular means of teaching and studying with all major academic players offering their own range of courses. But how is a MOOC produced? And is all that glistens really gold?
In his presentation, Oliver Vornberger shows how he produced a MOOC covering the content of an entire introductory lecture to algorithms and data structures. Besides showing the individual steps, he also points at several challenges in the production and the sustainable use of Massive Open Online Courses as popular means of distance education in the digital classroom.
Oliver Vornberger is Professor for Computer Science at the University of Osnabrück where he serves as acting head of the Institute of Computer Science and as a founder and board member of virtUOS, the Center for Information Management and Virtual Teaching.
Over the course of his career Oliver worked in different places in Europe and in the US and also topically covered questions from very different areas within computer science ranging from theoretical computer science to computer graphics and e-learning. This reflects in his broad spectrum of teaching activities which also earned him several awards including the German national Ars legendi Award for Excellence in Academic Teaching.
