NewmanWAY: Faith and Reason | Ep. 1 with Joseph Johnston
Welcome to the VERY FIRST episode of "NewmanWAY", a podcast exploring the stories of real people from our community who have walked with others and, most importantly, walked with Christ. The WAY in NewmanWAY stands for "Walking Alongside You."
In this episode, Jon sits down with Joseph Johnston, the Director of the Sacramento Newman Center and a recent Newman student himself. Joe shares his personal journey, from growing up with a love for music and piano, to studying neurobiology, to stepping into leadership as a student volunteer serving students at UC Davis, and now as a young adult director serving the greater Sacramento area.
Together, Jon and Joe explore what it means to walk alongside others in faith, how Joe transitioned from Newman student to Newman director, and the vision he carries for the future of the Newman Center community.
The conversation dives deep into the relationship between faith and reason, addressing common misconceptions about Catholicism, the role of apologetics, and how to engage in meaningful dialogue with people who may not share the same beliefs. Joe also discusses the spiritual hunger many young adults feel today, the importance of silence in a noisy world, and how beauty can lead us closer to truth.
You’ll also hear about Joe’s experiences during his first semester as director, the inspiration of the “Peace Bench” from his personal life, and practical ways students can grow intellectually and spiritually in their daily lives.
Whether you’re a student, young professional, or simply someone curious about the harmony between science, philosophy, and faith, this episode offers thoughtful insights and encouragement for your journey.
