Experience a spectacular collection of the best timelapse videos captured from space during ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet’s second mission to the International Space Station, known as Mission Alpha (2021).
Filmed from 400 km above Earth, these stunning timelapses reveal our planet in constant motion — glowing auroras, powerful lightning storms, breathtaking day and night transitions, spacewalks, and dramatic spacecraft reentries — all condensed into a cinematic journey through orbit.
The footage was created using cameras programmed to capture images every half second, later assembled into smooth timelapse sequences playing at 25 frames per second — making most scenes appear up to 12 times faster than real time.
As Thomas Pesquet described when sharing this video:
“Probably the last timelapse from space — a special ‘best of’ montage. Get comfy, cast it to your biggest screen, and enjoy.”
During Mission Alpha, more than 200 scientific experiments were conducted aboard the ISS, including 40 European experiments and 12 new investigations led by CNES, highlighting Europe’s vital role in human spaceflight.
