A decade and a half after "Custer's Last Stand", a quasi-religious movement arose at a Lakota reservation at Wounded Knee, South Dakota. Adherents hoped that performing a "Ghost Dance" would bring the return of the buffalo and cause Whites to retreat from the region. Perhaps seeking redemption, soldiers in Custer's 7th Cavalry confronted and massacred about 300 Natives, including many women and children. This event virtually ended the wars of the plains, but as in the aftermath of Little Big Horn, Natives' memories of the tragedy would persist over the generations. Wounded Knee would become a symbol of the injustices that had been perpetrated against the continent's Natives since first contact.
