As a blacksmith and knife maker, forging knives, swords or even axes will eventually lead to a 2x72 band sander which generates a lot of metal dust. Not only are the sparks hot and can cause smoldering fires, they also end up covering all surfaces in the shop. The solution is a metal dust collector made from metal for metal. I explain how I make it and future videos on forging swords will happily show me collecting the grinding dust with this contraption.
The video shows the construction of the Thien Baffle, the metal frame including the collection chamber, conversion inlet, and a test of the system with lasers. Some computer generated visualization rounds out the story. For me this was very much a DIY project, but I may only be DIY for folks who already have some metal tools, e.g. welder. A much easier solution is to build a simple spark arrestor but that still leaves more metal dust in the shop than I want. For a knife shop, you really want a clean space as otherwise you need to separate finish work into a separate room.
