Connectivity Technologies Compared
Air-to-Ground (ATG)
Cell towers on the ground point up at belly antennas. Low Latency (fast response), Cheaper hardware. Only works over land. Slow speeds (3-10 Mbps). Cuts out over oceans.
L-Band Satellite
Low-frequency satellite data., extremely reliable, weather-proof. Global coverage. Very slow/expensive. Used mostly for cockpit comms (ACARS) & safety.
Ku-Band Satellite
12-18 GHz GEO Satellites (22,000 miles up). Global coverage. Mature technology. High latency (lag). Bandwidth shared by many planes. Large antenna required.
Ka-Band Satellite
26-40 GHz High Throughput spot beams. Very high speeds (100+ Mbps). Can stream video. Susceptible to Rain Fade (weather interference). Coverage gaps in some regions.
LEO (Starlink/OneWeb)
Low Earth Orbit (300-1000 miles up). Fiber-like speed and latency. New tech. Requires electronically steered antennas.
