At least 7 anti-government demonstrators were reportedly killed in Mozambique when the ruling Frelimo party's Daniel Chapo was sworn in as the new president on Wednesday (January 15). As per a local NGO, the protesters were killed in the capital Maputo, and the Nampula region. This brings the total death toll in Mozambique's post-poll violence to 307. Chapo called for national unity amid months of violent protests against his win. The controversial session was boycotted by two opposition parties that do not recognise the results of the elections, while the opposition presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, who calls himself the true winner threatened to paralyse the country by protesting every single day if necessary.
