Does AGI require consciousness, or is consciousness merely an evolutionary side effect of biology, something we are mistakenly trying to recreate in silicon? Quick clarification: In the video, I reference Integrated Information Theory (IIT). IIT proposes a quantity called Φ (phi) a measure of integrated information not “five” or “hi-fi.” According to the theory, higher Φ corresponds to a greater degree of consciousness.

IIT is one influential but contested account of consciousness, and it’s presented here as part of a broader philosophical debate, not settled science.
